In the zoo in Miyazaki city, a elephant challenged the Kakizome which is new year calligraphy writing.
An Asian elephant “Midori” got the most attention in the zoo. After showing New Year’s greetings and hula hoop-using arts, she showed off Kakizome.
Midori manipulated the brush well with a long nose while trying to write the character of “戌” ( which means dog in Kanji),the animal zodiac sign of this year. And next she challenged to write “いぬ” in hiragana. When she wrote up the difficult curves with a brilliant brush, a big cheer was raised.
Midori’s Kakizome also will be held tomorrow.
In Japan there is a New Year event called Kakizome which is calligraphy writing at the beginning of the year, especially on Jan.2 . We usually write words of goals or expectations of the year. For example, it is “hope” or “dream comes true” or something like that in Kanji. We often do it as home work for winter break in elementary schools or junior high schools.
But this Kakizome is usually the New Year event of “human being”.
I saw elephant’s Kakizome for the first time.
Moreover, it was meaningful characters. He wrote the character “dog” which is the animal zodiac of this year with kanji and hiragana.
I don’t know how much she practiced it. but I believe that the elephant is a clever animal.
However, unfortunately, there are no “elephant” in 12 animal zodiac signs. Well, even if there were, it would be impossible for her to write the “elephant” of kanji “象”. On the other hand, it may be possible to write it in hiragana “ぞう”.
