As of Dec. 27, the number of confirmed death row prisoners in Japan was 122, 6 decrease from the same period last year and the number dropped for the first time in 2 years as of the end of the year.
Among them, 95 people are requesting a retrial, but the ministry has shown a stance that requesting a retrial is not reason of avoiding execution in July and December when executions were carried out this year. We will pay an attention to the trend next year.
There were only 4 death row prisoners executed this year including two last week but I think the number may rise next year. After the trial of Naoko Kikuchi “a running bombing girl” who is innocent right now has been finished, there is only person, Mr,Katsuya Takahashi who is the last uncomfirmed defendant in so-called “Aum Shinrikyo Cases”, a series of mass murder caused by a religious cult. I think the Supreme Court judgement to Mr,Katsuya Takahashi will come out next year.
Normally, in the case of such multiple defendants, executions will be carried out after all related defendants in the case have been finalized.
There are 13 death row prisoners including the leader Matsumoto Chizuo in “Aum Shinrikyo Cases”. As we look at the number of executions up to now, it may be impossible for simultaneous executions. It will be divided into two in summer and winter, will not it?
Anyway, It will have been 30 years next year since the first murder occured in Aum (it was not the case in court) The mastermind is still alive. I think that court progress has been too slow and late although I also think that execution should be carried out very carefully.
Well, anyway, I don’t think that they will see the news of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
